The Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory in Frankfurt is a world leader in research on legal history and legal theory. We award several PhD student, post-doctoral and senior researcher scholarships and we also have the opportunity to provide workstations for researchers with third-party funding. All guests are expected to pursue their own research project which should relate to the Institute’s research agenda.
If you plan to apply for a third-party scholarship (e.g. Alexander von Humboldt, DAAD, Fulbright, etc.) and would like the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory to serve as your hosting institute, you can apply for a letter of invitation via this application form.
Please select the department (Multidisciplinary Theory of Law - Marietta Auer, Historical Regimes of Normativity - Thomas Duve, European and Comparative Legal History - Stefan Vogenauer) or research group (The hidden heritage of the European Union: the legacy of the law of the League of Nations - Michel Erpelding) you would like to apply for in the application form and upload your CV, research proposal and, if applicable, a list of publications.
If the letter of invitation requires a specific format, please indicate this. Alternatively, you can upload a suitable template. In the application form, please indicate by when you require the letter of invitation and when the decision on your third-party funding application is expected.
Once a decision has been made, please contact us to inform us of the outcome.
Please note that it takes us at least four weeks to process applications.
